IUSD is committed to creating positive educational environments in which students and families have a sense of belonging and feel connected to their schools, peers, teachers and our district. To this end, the District’s Student Support Services and Education Services departments provide a variety of services for all IUSD families, including parent workshops and education programs, community meetings, access to resources, language support and translations, and more!
We appreciate and recognize the important partnership we have with our parents and families. Through the Parent and Family Engagement programs, IUSD offers various avenues for all families to actively engage in the school community and contribute to their children's learning journey.

IUSD Student and Family Support
In addition to supports provided by IUSD schools, which includes administrators, teachers, mental health and counseling teams and many other staff members, we recognize that our families may need and appreciate targeted supports and resources.
Kim Bates | Student Support Services
I am dedicated to supporting all families in IUSD through the coordination of parent workshops and classes. In my role, I oversee the support provided by our Community Liaisons. I am here to address any inquiries related to the IUSD Parent Center and provide assistance accordingly. Additionally, I manage district translation projects, supervise our interpreters and ensure their availability for district and site meetings. On an individual basis, I offer support to families facing attendance and truancy concerns. Along with the Irvine Unified Council PTA, I aim to align and coordinate parent engagement efforts for the benefit of our entire community. Translation and Language Support
The District’s Community Liaisons serve the following language-based communities: Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Services include interpretation/translation, hosting parent workshops and assisting families, IUSD schools and staff to form important connections. The team strives to bring cultural awareness and empower parents in our communities to be engaged in their children’s education.

Shalonda Ibrahim-Abubakar | Mental Health Specialist
My name is Shalonda Ibrahim-Abubakar, the Community Support Mental Health Specialist serving primarily the African American/Black population within IUSD. In my role, I serve as a resource to parents, students and staff to help reduce barriers to learning for students by:
- Maximizing access to resources
- Providing counseling services
- Offering staff professional development and coaching
- Facilitating multicultural engagement
- Supporting the implementation of culturally responsive practices
