Erica Turrell, Vocal Music Teacher at Plaza Vista School, and Henry Miller, Instrumental Music Teacher at Sierra Vista Middle School, were named semifinalists for the .
The Music Teachers of Excellence Award recognizes educators who demonstrate exceptional dedication to advancing music education within their school and community. This recognition not only highlights Turrell and Miller’s dedication to their students but also represents IUSD’s award-winning music education program and music educators. Miller was awarded the CMA Music Teacher of Excellence Award in 2019.
The CMA Foundation, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting music education and the philanthropic arm of the Country Music Association, selected 222 public school music teachers nationwide as semifinalists.
Turrell and Miller are two of three educators selected from Orange County, with only 14 chosen from California. Educators chosen for this honor represent 43 states and the District of Columbia.
Semifinalists were identified through a rigorous application and review process conducted by a panel of respected music education professionals. Applicants were evaluated based on multiple criteria, including professional and personal growth, contributions to their schools and communities and their impact on student learning and engagement.
Each finalist award includes a $5,000 prize, with $2,500 designated for the recipient’s classroom and $2,500 to support the teacher’s ongoing professional development. Finalist announcements will be made in May 2026.
