About the Competitors and Their Projects

Annika Chatterjee, a sophomore at University High School, won the 4th Place Category Award in Biochemistry, earning a $600 prize. Her project examined how the chemical peroxynitrite may trigger a chain of molecular events that lead to inflammation in the body and make hormone disorders more severe.

Nathan Kang, a senior at Northwood High School, participated as a finalist in the Materials Science category with the project titled “Design and Characterization of Novel Imatinib-Loaded Nanoparticles for Localized Immunomodulation."

Sebastian Alexis, a junior at Northwood High School, won the 3rd Place Category Award in Systems Software, earning a $1,200 prize. His project used the mathematical method of Kolmogorov Complexity to flag PDF files that may contain or disguise harmful code as normal content.

This year’s event featured nearly 2,000 young scientists from 48 U.S. states and more than 60 countries, regions and territories. With over $9 million in awards distributed, the competition celebrated projects marked by creativity, innovation and scientific inquiry.

At the competition, finalists underwent a rigorous judging process where they interacted with professional scientists, engineers and mathematicians from around the world. They also had the opportunity to share their passion for science with peers from across the globe, through events such as the Student Pin Exchange, a cultural exchange event where finalists traded pins symbolizing their home countries.

Congratulations to these IUSD students for their remarkable achievements and for representing our district with distinction at this renowned international competition.
